Punctuation Pointers -- Editing and Proofreading for Clarity and Consistency
Punctuation is often one of the last things we think about when we're writing. Most punctuation comes naturally to us. Even as I am writing and you are reading this now, we both know a period will end this sentence. And if you don't enclose a parenthetical phrase with commas in your latest Web page, will your new visitor really click off the site? If the period appears outside the quotation mark and the question mark appears within, will the editor slip your mystery novel right back into the envelope, unread? Maybe not. But why let a botched semicolon interrupt your rapid sentence flow, or collapsing commas weaken your brilliant lead? Whether starting up that new Web site, writing your monthly e-zine, or putting that final edit on your latest short story, clarity and consistency are keys to a professional appearance. You have your copy ready. Now are you ready to proofread for accuracy and consistency and the nitpicky little things? Please see my free sample tips by clicking on the topic that interests you.
